The inaugural Hong Kong Open Drone Racing Championship was held in Sheung Shui on November 17th. Organised by the newly-formed Hong Kong Drone Sports Association (of which Dronesurvey CEO Nick Foxall is a founding member), the event saw top competitors from South Korea, the US, Norway, China, Chinese Taipei, Macau, and Hong Kong compete with some exciting and close racing.
In total, 23 regional & local pilots battled it out for the crown of “Hong Kong Drone Racing Champion”. Conditions at the sports ground of Fung Kai No. 1 Secondary School in Sheung Shui were perfect for some full-on race action.
After some intense rounds of racing, Sungju Park from South Korea emerged as the 2019 Hong Kong Open Champion, while Ronnie Chow and Ken Inoue of Hong Kong were the 1st & 2nd runners-up respectively.
The winners will go on to the World Drone Racing Championships, to be held in NingBo China in December, 2019.
This was Hong Kong’s first official FAI-sanctioned drone racing event, and the first Civil Aviation Department approved drone race in town. Classified as a Category 2 racing event, it was the only race in Hong Kong this year to feature the top 5-inch FVP (first person view) racing drones, set to international standards. Every competing pilot was required to either possess an FAI National Sporting License or a FAI Permission for Drone Racing.

The Hong Kong Drone Sports Association
The newly-formed Hong Kong Drone Sports Association (HKDSA) is an FAI-accredited, non-profit organisation set up promote and support all forms of recreational, competitive and commercial drone activities in Hong Kong, within an environment of safety, responsibility and mutual respect, as well as promoting drone racing becoming a mainstream sport in Hong Kong and the region.
Dronesurvey Asia will be actively involved in the HKDSA, promoting greater adoption of drone technologies in Hong Kong, advocating on behalf of the commercial drone industry, assisting with drone training, and promoting safe and responsible practises around all types of drone operation.
